Obstacle Challenge Scoring Key
5 Highest Score Possible: Horse/Rider approach
obstacle with ease and focus, navigate obstacle without hesitation and leave
calmly.
4 Horse enters obstacle with some hesitation,
stepping to the side or back slightly, but completes the obstacle under complete
control.
3 Hesitation very evident. Horse steps back or
sideways several steps showing some refusal. Rider gives continued
encouragement and horse performs obstacle, but exits abruptly.
2 Much nervousness, refusal, and dancing around
by the horse. Rider convinces the horse to at least try. It appears that given
more time, the team would be able to negotiate the obstacle but they are unable
to at this time.
1
Horse
‘puts on the brakes’ and refuses to try even with coaxing from the rider.
Continued efforts by the rider escalate in to a ‘fight’ and rider is forced to
give up.
0
A.
Rider doesn’t even attempt obstacle.
B.
Rider using excessive force (beating, obsessive kicking,
yelling/screaming) on horse or exhibiting unsportsmanlike
behavior.
Note: ‘Half Points’ (example 4.5) may be awarded if judge feels that the team
performance on any obstacle falls between the suggested scale number divisions.
Obstacle Challenge Rules
1.
This is
a scored and timed event. Riders and their horses will be scored on control,
trust, partnership, and performance as they attempt to negotiate each obstacle.
2.
There
will be a 6 minute time limit for completing the series of obstacles.
3.
In the
event of tie scores, the rider times will be used to determine winners.
4.
Riders
age 18 and under will be required to wear a helmet. Those over 18 are encouraged
to do so.
5.
You may
skip any obstacle you are not comfortable with. Doing so will result on a score
of ‘0’ for that obstacle.
6.
The use
of excessive force by a rider on any obstacle will result in a score of ‘0’ for
that obstacle. Continuation of this type of conduct will result in expulsion
from the competition.
