horses since he was 10 years old and training horses for the past 20
plus years. He has had the opportunity to study under and learn from

Judge in 2007 VA Trainer Challenge
VA Trainer Challenge Sponsored by
VirginiAnimalID.com |
Katherine
Burke, DVM
Dr. Katherine Burke graduated from the Virginia- Maryland Regional
College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003 and began working at Woodside on
September, 15, 2005. Since graduation she has been working for Blue
Mountain Equine Services in Madison, Virginia. This busy two doctor
practice offered her a chance to gain experience in all aspects of
equine veterinary medicine. She is looking forward to joining a larger
practice as well as getting to know the Richmond area. Dr. Burke took
her first horseback riding lesson at the age of six. After failure as
ballerina, pianist, gymnast and soccer goalie, her family was relieved
to see that she held some potential. By age eight she had her heart set
on veterinary school and never changed focus. During her off time she
still heads straight for the barn. A recent switch from the hunter ring
to eventing has presented a whole new set of challenges for her riding
hobby. Other than horses, Dr. Burke also enjoys hiking, volleyball,
meeting new people and playing with her dog, Noodle.

Paul Kalinowski -
Cupid and Arrow |
Paul Kalinowski - Cupid and Arrow
Paul "Buck" Kalinowski, Jr. was born in a small New
England town in the State of Connecticut in the Spring of 1958. At a
very young age, he discovered that he had a great affection and respect
for horses. While growing up, he worked at a neighborhood farm, learning
all he could about handling and understanding these beautiful animals.
Paul still resides in Wolcott, the small town he grew
up in. Through hard work and diligence, he is now the proud owner of
a 50-acre farm that stables nearly 90 horses, as well as cows,
llamas, goats, chickens and even a peacock.
Feeling blessed by what he has, he feels a need to
give back to the community. Even with his very busy schedule, he
finds time to work with mentally and physically challenged
individuals through therapeutic riding lessons. At any given time,
you will also find him working extensively with inner city children
who do not have the privilege of country living. Through spending
time with these children, he hopes that they too will find the
affection and respect he has for his horses, but also for each other
by learning responsibility and teamwork.

Buck Kalinowski Cupid's
Secret
"Cupid's Secret" is about an abused horse that nobody
wanted. Farmer Buck saw her at a horse auction, small and sickly. He
pushed aside her straggly mane and discovered a perfectly shaped
white heart in the middle of her forehead. Farmer Buck's heart went
out to this frightened creature. Even though he didn't need another
horse, he bought her and took her home.
Cupid is a real horse, with a real heart on her
forehead and literally was saved from being sold for meat. She has
an amazing story to tell. Hear how this little horse overcame her
fears, learned to trust people after being hurt, accepted help and
believed in herself to try something new when she was entered in
that horse show and just when you think that's a wonderful story she
hits you with a surprise of a lifetime.
The Adventures of Arrow
“The Adventures of Arrow” is the delightful and
lesson-filled sequel to Buck’s best-seller, Cupid’s Secret. Here are
stories about love and forgiveness combined with a message that when
things don’t go well you must never give up nor stop trying.
Arrow is the colt born to Cupid, and in the four
short stories that comprise “The Adventures of Arrow,” readers learn
about Arrow’s adventures and misadventures growing up.

Colleen Kelly - Rider Biomechanics, Vaulting,
Balance, Dressage |
Colleen Kelly - Rider Biomechanics, Vaulting,
Balance
If you like to have
fun while you learn, Colleen is the clinician to
see! Biomechanics Lecturer Colleen Kelly,
MISRB, MISBS, EFA - NJAS Official Judge,
President, Vaulting Victoria, started her career
in exercise physiology, and now, some 30 years
later, is one of most sought-after speakers
around the world.
After 8 years in research with the University of
NSW, and as the previous Spokeswoman for the
WorkCover Authority of NSW, Technical Delegate &
head gear checker for the Australian National
Titles, Colleen’s elite lecture circuit includes
the Equestrian Federations of Australia, New
Zealand & Canada and Championship Federation
Events.
Her easy way of connecting to crowds of all
ages, and the fact that seat & posture applies
to all horse sports, has seen her invited many
times to return to speak at world-class
conferences such as Sporthorse Expo, EquineXpo
and the world's largest trade fair: Equitana.
If they say "you get it from your family", then
Colleen's family history was always going to see
her raise to the top. Colleen's great
grandmother Mary Louise Berry (b.1836) was well
known for training animals and breaking horses,
and, probably because of her petite size, was
unable to do the rough "rope them down" methods.
This kind method of breaking was followed by
Colleen's Grandfather, Alan Manuel. Colleen has
always trained animals learning carefully from
her mother, Gwen Kelly who not only was a master
horsewoman, but able to train trick animals -
even able to train cats to do every animal trick
you can think of!
Colleen owned, trained and performed with the
well known 'Rex the Wonderhorse', and Patch the
Wonderdog at shows and performances around
Australia.
Colleen always rode, but first started riding
seriously in endurance riding, later switching
to the fun of polocrosse and doing a few highly
successful campdrafts, then for many years
showing with her famous show horse "Thendara Old
Times". After the massive 18hh Old Times was
injured & scared in a paddock accident, Colleen
switched her training talents to dressage, and
now is the Trainer and President of both the
Vaulting Victoria riders and horses.
Colleen has judged at Agricultural & Royal
Shows, State Titles and National Championships
in arabs, appaloosas, quarter horses, warmbloods,
eventing and dressage, and has many pupils on
State and National Squads around the world.
Now settled in Melbourne, Australia, Colleen and
her partner Nick Tsopanis have a team of roughly
15 horses from champion ponies to massive
Holsteiners, the Victorian Vaulting horses, and
has FEI level schoolmasters for visitors.
Colleen is well-known for receiving a remarkable
100% in her Official Judge's Exam, however it’s
her “Irish Sense of Humour” and fun
presentations that keep audiences around the
world laughing, and has seen her awarded with 3
separate awards from Riding for Disabled. |

Michael Tokaruk,
Hunter/Jumper |
Michael Tokaruk,
Hunter/Jumper
Michael
began riding at the age of twelve in his
native Canada. At age fifteen, he took his
first working student position at the top
Canadian hunter barn of the time, Gimcrack.
At
Gimcrack, Michael trained under Wayne
McClellan and Robert Meilsoe. Michael & his
family moved to the United States soon
after, and Michael sought another working
student position - this time landing at
River's Edge Farm with Ken Berkley and Gary
Zook. During his time at River's Edge, he
progressed through the junior hunter,
jumper, and equitation ranks. He was also
fortunate enough to work extensively with
many nationally renowned trainers including
Scott Stewart, Missy Clark, Bob Braswell,
and Anne Kursinski. Michael's junior career
was highlighted with equitation wins at
Devon, Palm Beach, and everywhere in
between. He garnered junior jumper
championships up and down the east coast,
from Lexington to Blowing Rock to Florida.
Michael ended his equitation career by
earning ribbons in the USET, CET, and AHSA
National Medal Finals.
Upon
graduating from the junior ranks, Michael
juggled the demands of being a full time
college student with his desire to ride and
train professionally. During this time,
Michael spent extended periods of time
riding and working in Holland. In Holland,
Michael was fortunate enough to train under
Dutch legend Roeloef Bril while riding at
two large sales barns.
Upon
returning stateside, Michael earned his
degree in Political Science from George
Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Immediately after graduation, Michael
accepted the position as head professional
rider at Spring Mill Farm. During his almost
4 years working for David Pellegrini at
Spring Mill, Michael trained numerous
juniors and amateurs to countless blue
ribbons and championships in the hunter,
jumper, and equitation divisions. Michael
trained and rode many horses to
championships in the professional hunter and
jumper divisions at ‘AA’ rated horse shows
across the Midwest and South. Most notably,
Michael won the AHJF Legacy Cup as a
professional in 2005, and has won multiple
grand prix over the past several years.
Michael currently is the co-owner and
operator of Tokaruk Show Stables, LLC, where
he is continuing in the next chapter of an
exceptional life with horses.

Victorian Ladies Aside - Side Saddle |
Victorian Ladies Aside - Side Saddle
Sanctioned by ISSO, Victorian Ladies Aside was formed in the early
1990's by a group of ladies with an interest in recreating an
elegant vision of the lost art of riding in a sidesaddle. Utilizing
historically correct 1860's period attire these ladies perform
demonstrations at Civil War reenactments and other clinics and
shows. Led by Janet Brown of Bumpass, VA, every attempt has been
made to accurately portray a proper lady of the 1860's.
The
International Side Saddle Organization (www.sidesaddle.com),
also known as ISSO, is a group dedicated to the art of side saddle
riding. Whether you are a side saddle rider who rides for her own
enjoyment or if you are a rider who loves to compete we are here for
you. Our members, at present, run the gamut from trail riders to
third level Dressage riders, to ladies who participate in reining,
Western Pleasure, Saddle Seat and parades and everything in between.
Although we offer an extensive awards program, we are not an award
oriented organization. The side saddle is to be enjoyed and
recognized as a beautiful and lovely way to ride.
Whether
you are a beginner, a seasoned rider or someone who has ever dreamt
of riding side saddle, come and explore this lovely way to ride. |

Larry Whitesell -
Gaited Horses
|
Larry
Whitesell - Gaited Horses
Larry Whitesell has been training
gaited horses since 1980. He has been very
successful in the show ring, winning many
regional, national and grand national
championships. He held judges cards in several
gaited breeds. In 2002, he was Trainer of the
Year.
In the early 1990's, Larry was
not satisfied training horses to just win
ribbons. He wanted to train "using" or pleasure
horses to a very high level, to make a safer,
more dependable horse for his clients. Horses
trained like this should also do well in the
show ring or anywhere else an owner wanted to
take them.
Larry began learning classical
dressage because he wanted correctness, and
liked the lightness and softness these horses
showed. Later, after spending time with several
"natural horsemen", he felt they were teaching
him the same things his classical teachers had.
They taught the same movements, philosophy, and
basically the same techniques. They just called
movements different names and dressed
differently. So he continues to learn from both
schools.
Now, Larry travels the U.S.
and Canada doing clinics and horse fairs. He
still primarily spends time training the
ultimate pleasure horses for people around the
country.

Kristi
Weltner-Redd - Strengthening and Stretching
Techniques for the Rider
Kristi
Weltner-Redd has been involved with
horses for over 25 years. She began showing
western pleasure and horsemanship as a child.
Her interest later expanded to hunt seat and
jumping, then to dressage. Ms. Redd is currently
a professional trainer and instructor using
dressage principles to instruct riders of all
disciplines. The study of dressage helped her
understand the importance of the rider's body
awareness. She had observed problems with
students who were not lacking athleticism, but
still appeared "stiff and rigid" in the saddle.
Kristi began consulting with her brother Dan,
regarding her own fitness regimen, and he
developed exercises for her and her students. He
helped her to educate these students on the
importance of "accepting" the movement of the
horse into the rider's body. Riders who used
these exercises to increase their muscular
efficiency, have greater success in functioning
as "one" with the horse. Through this insight,
the Equi-Stretch® method of exercise was
created. Kristi holds a Bachelor's Degree in
Equine Science from Otterbein College,
Westerville, Ohio. She is also a NARHA (North
American Riding for the Handicapped Association)
Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor. |
